Volumes kept by Henry Knox as a bookseller, Revolutionary War officer, and U.S. Secretary of War, with some personal papers. Volumes kept as owner of his "London bookstore" in Boston are his wastebook (1771) and his letterbook (1774-75). Revolutionary War materials include his diary of a journey from Ft. Ticonderoga (N.Y.) with cannons obtained for the fortification of Dorchester Heights during the Siege of Boston (20 Nov. 1775-13 Jan. 1776); three orderly books, two for Crane's (later the Third) Continental Artillery Regiment (25 March 1776-7 Sept. 1777; 9 Aug. 1779-31 March 1780), and one for the Corps of Artillery (1 Jan.-8 Aug. 1781) kept in northern N.J. and the West Point, N.Y. area; and an undated volume of artillery exercises and experiments. One orderly book also contains orders for the 40th British Infantry Regiment kept from 6 Oct.-24 Nov. 1776 during the New York City campaign. (Cont'd) Papers from Knox's term as Secretary of War include an account book of departmental expenditures (1786-90), and reports and instructions regarding diplomatic negotiations and treaties between the War Office and the Wabash, Creek, and Cherokee Indians (1789). Knox's personal papers include notes on the Muscongus (or Waldo) Patent lands in Waldoborough and Thomaston, Me.; and his personal account books for 1789 and 1792-1803.
